		In the Great Lakes Basin alone, there are nearly 200 different invasive species.

		Round goby (_Neogobius melanostomus_) and zebra mussel (_Dreissena polymorpha_) are both aquatic invasive species found in Ontario. Other invasive species found in the Great Lakes Basin include sea lamprey, waterfleas and purple loosestrife.

		One example of an invasive species that has had a negative impact on the Great Lakes is the zebra mussel. The zebra mussels have an economic impact and an ecological impact. Zebra mussels have multiplied and attach to boats, pipes, buoys, docks, piers, plants, slow-moving animals such as turtles, and even each other. This results in dense colonies that can be up to one foot thick. In parts of Lake Erie, zebra mussel densities of over 1 million per square meter have been recorded. Water users have had to upgrade their water-intake systems or apply chemicals to prevent zebra mussel related problems. During storms, tons of zebra mussel shells wash up on on beaches, increasing costs in swimming areas in Lake Erie. Zebra mussles are filter feeders, and clean the water in the lakes they live in, but they also clear the lake off other animals and algae that supply food for larval fish and other invertebrates, making some other animal populations decline.
